“Hold on, hold on, all of you,” said Mr. Harrod. He forced his eyes open and rose stiffly from his log, walking over with one hand on his aching back. “Keiko, what happened?”

Keiko looked around nervously at her troop, who were glaring back at her with narrowed eyes. “Uh…”

“She turned away for a second and Molly whacked Keiko’s bag with her stick!” said Derek Fitzsimmons, pointing to Molly’s roasting stick. “You can see it right in front of you!”

“I was trying to get it out of the fire!” said Molly. “Keiko, tell them!”

But Keiko gulped and looked down at her feet.

Molly turned to Felicia. “Felicia, you saw what happened!”

But Felicia gulped and looked down at her packet of tissues.

“All right, let’s just move on from this,” said Mr. Harrod, sighing.

“But—” Derek Fitzsimmons started to object.

“Move on,” said Mrs. Apple, and her voice made it very clear that moving on would be the only path forward. She picked Mortimer up and flounced back to her seat.

But Molly found that she couldn’t move on. As she turned her stick around to cook her breakfast-in-a-bag, she muttered, “Of all the low-down, nasty—” She caught Rio’s eye, and he nodded. Molly nodded back.

The Shades really were the enemy.
